The Valley, a blog focused on the arts of Chippewa Valley, WI, recently invited Northern Howl over state lines to shoot two videos. Live versions of 'Madigan' and 'Ice Caps' were filmed as they roamed through a deserted library. They can be found
here.
These sessions with The Valley coincided with the conclusion of their first tour which was an unmitigated success. Thanks to all who came out and supported them.
To coincide with their first tour,
Daytrotter has posted Northern Howl's session which was recorded a few months back. It includes two tracks from their R+N debut, 'All That's Under the Night's Sky,' as well as two new songs. The session is available
here.
The
events page contains dates and locations for their Midwest Tour which begins in Duluth, Minnesota, on December 30th. Most shows are with Twin Cities favorites Caroline Smith and the Good Night Sleeps.
Aquarelle's R+N disc 'Slow Circles' was recently mentioned on Pitchfork via
Volcano Choir's Guest List. Regarding the album, Thomas Wincek (also of Collections of Colonies of Bess and All Tiny Creatures) had the following to say:
Ryan Potts, a guy from Minneapolis, has a project called Aquarelle that's made some of my favorite music this year. He just finished an album [Slow Circles] that he's been working on for a while, sort of long-form, beautiful
shimmering processed guitar music. I'd heard some of the material years
ago when I came across it on MySpace looking for Minneapolis musicians,
and was blown away by the sounds he had up. I contacted him and we
chatted, but didn't really speak again for a couple of years. Then, out
of the blue, a couple of months ago he sent me this finished disc and
I've been jamming it ever since.
Similarly, Adequacy.net published a glowing review of Northern Howl's debut album which they claim, "It’s unbelievably catchy with soft melodies and subtle hooks, while the
acoustic guitars pick away in their folksy glory. The tipping point for 'All That's Under the Night's Sky' are the horns, pianos, and bells that add depth and spirit to an already accomplished sound.... Northern Howl’s fantastic new album is definitely worth hearing. Over and over and over again." Read the full review here.
Aquarelle’s new album ‘Slow Circles’ is now
available through the R + N store and will ship immediately. Local print weekly City Pages ran a feature
on Aquarelle outlining his influences, approach to sound, and, of course, ‘Slow
Circles.’ The feature can be found
online
here as well as the full interview
here. Hear a track on the
releases page.
From City Pages:
While ‘Circles’ doesn't assault the ear, it does confront
and stealthily engulf it. "Everything Changes into Itself" opens with
a shimmery, shivering hum that rustles and ruminates even as it cascades and
expands in volume and depth. Thermal, incubator slosh and wonder characterize
"A Good Egg," while the pitch-shifted tiptoe and awestruck keyboard
twinkles of "Clementine" are nothing short of breathtaking.
